Looking for something besides Star Wars or the Marvel films to watch this year? Here are four films that are coming out this year that we think look pretty great. I know I’m gonna hit the cinema up a lot this year.
- James Bond: Spectre
“A cryptic message from Bond’s past sends him on a trail to uncover a sinister organization. While M battles political forces to keep the secret service alive, Bond peels back the layers of deceit to reveal the terrible truth behind SPECTRE.” (IMDb)
Also, it’s worth noting that Andrew Scott (who plays Moriarty in BBC’s Sherlock) will be in this film as well.
- Mad Max: Fury Road
“In a post-apocalyptic world, in which people fight to the death, Max teams up with a mysterious woman, Furiousa, to try and survive.” (IMDb)
“In a post-apocalyptic wasteland, loner Max meets Furiosa, a woman who wishes to cross the desert.” (Wiki)
This is the fourth film in the Mad Max series and portrays a much younger Max who is played by none other than the phenomenal Tom Hardy. (If you can’t tell I’m a Tom Hardy fangirl.) But, alongside this stellar actor we also have Nicholas Hoult (X-Men: First Class and Days of Future Past as well as Warm Bodies), Zoë Kravitz (X-Men: First Class and Divergent), and Charlize Theron (The Italian Job , Hancock, Prometheus, and Snow White and the Huntsman).
- The Man From U.N.C.L.E.
“In the early 1960s, CIA agent Napoleon Solo and KGB operative Illya Kuryakin participate in a joint mission against a mysterious criminal organization, which is working to proliferate nuclear weapons.” (IMDb)
This is reboot of the television show The Man from UNCLE that ran from 1964 to 1968. Much like the green hornet (which I really suggest you don’t see the film, just don’t) this is a new, more modern take on it but it has a sort of James Bond appeal to it. Also has a great cast, such as: Henry Cavill (Man of Steel, Immortals, and Stardust), Hugh Grant (Cloud Atlas, Music and Lyrics, and Four Weddings and a Funeral), and finally Armie Hammer (The Lone Ranger, Mirror Mirror, and J. Edgar).
- Mr. Holmes
“Long-retired and near the end of his life, Sherlock Holmes grapples with an unreliable memory and must rely on his housekeeper’s son as he revisits the still-unsolved case that led to his retirement.” (Wiki)
“An aged, retired Sherlock Holmes looks back on his life, and grapples with an unsolved case involving a beautiful woman.” (IMDb)
With Ian McKellen as Mr. Holmes you can’t go wrong. The man’s been in Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, X-Men, Doctor Who, The Golden Compass, Stardust, Flushed Away, The Da Vinci Code, and not to mention all the Shakespearean works he’s done and all the work he’s done in theatre. The man was knighted by the Queen even! Ian McKellen is an amazing genius.
While there’s no one else in this film as great as Ian McKellen, there are a few that should be mentioned. Such as: Patrick Kennedy (War Horse, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, Atonement, Downtown Abbey, and Parades End), Hiroyuki Sanada (The Wolverine, 47 Ronin, Helix, Lost, and Rush Hour 3) and Philip Davis (Alien 3, Doctor Who, Whitechapel, Being Human, Merlin, and Sherlock).
So if you’re looking for something good to see this year we highly suggest that you go and see one of these four films. I know I’m particularly excited for Mad Max: Fury Road and James Bond: Spectre. I’ll be seeing those opening night. What film are you excited to see this year?
